  • Capacity building for small fundraising operations
  • Starting and expanding major gifts and planned giving programs
  • Creating and refining high-end, personal touch direct mail and communications for donors

Bio

Leslie Allen is a development professional with 20 years of experience in raising money for advocacy and community groups. After graduating from Boston University with a MBA in Public and Not-for-Profit Management, Leslie spent 14 years at Greenpeace USA working in nearly every stream of the organization’s large and diverse fundraising program. She founded Greenpeace’s robust planned giving program and was promoted into the position of Deputy Director of Development, where she led a planned giving, major gifts and annual giving team to raise $10 million per year.

Most recently, Leslie has served as Director of Development and Communications for Global Greengrants Fund in Boulder, Colorado, where she built a professional development department, oversaw a strong foundations program, jump-started a now rapidly growing major gifts program for individuals and re-vamped donor communications.

Leslie has worked with a range of organizations on a professional and volunteer basis including Action Aid International, Boston Center for the Arts, Fondo Accion Solidaria in Mexico, Friends Community School in Maryland and Global Response in Colorado. Leslie and her husband, Jamie Brache, live in Boulder, Colorado with their three young daughters.

Nilmini Hecox

Consulting Areas

  • Individual donor development

Bio

After “falling into” the field of Fundraising and Development while earning her Masters Degree in Theater History at Indiana University, Nilmini hasn’t looked back! Over the past 8 years Nilmini has worked in numerous areas of philanthropy in the non-profit world, including the arts, healthcare, domestic violence, education and human rights.

Since moving to Denver, Colorado in 2003, Nilmini grounded her learning in development at the Colorado School of Mines, where she worked in the Major Gifts Department of the Office of Institutional Advancement. During her time at Mines, Nilmini worked exclusively with major alumni donors in all areas of development from prospect identification to donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. She also managed the annual Reunion Giving Volunteer Program which raised approximately 30 percent of the School’s total annual giving.

Currently, Nilmini is in her third year as Development Director at the Colorado Center on Law and Policy. In this role, Nilmini exclusively manages their major individual donors as well as running the overall Development Program, which she established as the Center’s first-ever Development Director.

In addition to her “day-job”, Nilmini also consults with area non-profits with particular emphasis in individual donor development. Her most current work is with the Urgent Action Fund in Boulder, a women’s human rights organization that provides rapid-response grants to human rights activists around the world.

A native of Sri Lanka, Nilmini lives in Denver with her husband, two little girls and dog and can be found running, practicing yoga or covered in glitter glue and baby lotion when not fundraising!

Jay Katz, SDGrants.org and Grants West

Consulting Areas

  • Proposal writing and research
  • Grant review and editing
  • Start-to-finish services, including proposal writing, assembly and delivery
  • Group or one-on-one trainings

Bio

I bring forward more than 15 years of experience developing grant proposals, and 11 years of operating Grants West. In all cases, I develop effective, clear and quality proposals that are routinely funded -- and frequently praised by funding sources themselves. My aim is to develop highly competitive proposals -- and take the burden of grant writing off the shoulders of agency staff.

In addition to grant writing, I am actively involved as a volunteer with several projects. I have won two community service awards (CHUN Good Neighbor Award, Life on Capitol Hill's Man of the Year). I have volunteered as a youth mentor, adult literacy tutor, neighborhood group president, microlending consultant, and in many other roles. I also coordinate a Spanish meetup group, organizing meetings and events for 900+ people interested in learning Spanish. Over the years, I have written articles on grant writing for the California Grants Guide, Colorado Grants Guide, Iowa Grants Guide and Ohio Grants Guide. In addition, I have presented as a guest lecturer to the University of Colorado at Denver's Graduate School of Public Policy, and provided other grant writing classes.
